What’s happening on your site right now?

Labels: Announcements, Features, New Google Analytics
The web is getting faster, and not just the speed of the pages, but also the speed of change. Before, it was fine to build a website and modify it only when new products were launched. All of us avid Analytics users know that’s just not good enough. We need to be constantly on the lookout for problems and opportunities.
Currently, Google Analytics does a great job analyzing past performance. Today we’re very excited to bring real time data to Google Analytics with the launch of Google Analytics Real-Time: a set of new reports that show what’s happening on your site as it happens.

Measuring social media impact
One way that I like to use these reports is to measure the immediate impact of social media. Whenever we put out a new blog post, we also send out a tweet. With Real-Time, I can see the immediate impact to my site traffic.
For example, last week we posted about the latest episode of Web Analytics TV and also tweeted about the post. By campaign tagging the links we shared, we could see how much traffic each channel is driving to the blog as it happened. We could also see when we stopped receiving visits from the tweet, which helps know when to reengage.

Campaign measurement
Another way I’m using Real-Time is to make sure campaign tracking is correctly implemented before launching a campaign. When getting ready to launch a new campaign it’s critical to make sure your measurement plan is working before you start driving visitors to the page. With the Real-Time reports you can find out in seconds whether you’re getting the data you want in Google Analytics.
Accessing Real-Time
You’ll find the Real-Time reports only in the new version of Google Analytics. If you’re not already using the new version, you can start by clicking the “New Version” link in the top right of Google Analytics. Real-Time reports are in the Dashboards tab (though they will move to the Home tab in the updated interface next week) . You will have access to Real-Time reports if you are an Administrator on your Analytics account, or if you have access to a profile without profile filters. Real-Time does not support profile filters.
We just turned the reports on for a number of you, and over the coming weeks, everyone will have access to Real-Time. If you can’t wait, sign up for early access here: https://services.google.com/fb/forms/realtimeanalytics/. We’d love to hear about how you are using (or planning to use) Real-Time, so please share in the comments.

SWEET! I think this will mostly come in handy for checking my work on custom filters and such. Usually I have to wait hours to make sure things are working as expected. Real time should significantly shorten that feedback loop!

It is a good one, but Chartbeat offers reproducting a past situation (very useful to understand what happened 3 hours ago, when there was a lot of unexpected visits).
An android/iOS app with the real time numbers will be wellcome to.

I'm digging the feature already, but have a couple of observations:
1. Data isn't inherently useful, so users need to think about what value they'll get.
2. The new feature doesn't show events, which we're relying on more and more as we develop interfaces that aren't all about pages.
3. Goals are huge - it would be great to see live data on goals (and maybe funnel visualization, for the real-time win).
In any case, kudos to your team and thanks for continuing the improvements.

I think is great, awesome and perfect... but have a question on how you allow access to new features. Specifically, I'm Google Analytics Qualified Individual and promoting this service everyday to customers, so it dissapoints me a little not to have any priority on the access to new features as this. May be you haven't thought about it, but we do appreciate every new feature, by mean, more than the rest of GA users (I repeat, by mean).

Thanks!

Thanks for enabling GA Real-Time promptly for us! A few suggestions:
1. Beneath the "Right Now" number, display: a) a 30-day max and min range chart with the "Right Now" number, max number, and min number indicated; b) a 24-hour trend line of today and the same day last week.
2. Under "Content," a) display a 24-hour trend line for landing pages; and b) for non-landing pages, e.g. news story pages, display a typical or average trend line calculated for all similar non-landing pages based on the time of the day and the day of the week.

Unusual to see you asking for feedback and directing us to the blog post, but here comes my biggest problem:
I'm from a company that uses the same code on all its websites and partners (MTV Brasil), so we often rely on hostname filters to dig trough our data.
Real time analytics does not contemplate that notion, so / means all homes, /page/2 all of our WordPresses' second pages, etcetera.
Do you plan on doing something about this soon?

This website received over 10.000 unique visitors daily, until June of 2011 that is, when suddenly traffic dropped to less than 300 visitors overnight! I have been utilizing Google analytics, the webmaster tools as other software extensively which has unfortunately not been helpful in getting back our rankings as of yet... Since the site had stable Google top 10 rankings since 2003 we first thought that unnoticed WP related errors on 4 of the site's blogs were mainly responsible for the traffic loss observed, yet with almost all errors resolved for a prolonged period of time and Google rankings at a 2000% decline as much as traffic is concerned I have my doubts... Does social media impact Google top 10 placements truly so much that one requires increasing amounts of daily bookmarks in Yahoo, Google and sites alike del.icio.us in addition to always growing 'likes' and 'plus ones' from visitors around the world? Wikipedia seems to rank well still although their real-time search results may not be all that impressive, and their regular rankings appear to have declined recently as well, or is it just me? Social media or coincidence.. Anyone?

*Forewarning*
I develop and run a music blog with a heavy social media presence. This list contains only elements of real time analytics that were relevant to my music blog. There are many many more elements in this beta that will be more relevant to a majority of webmasters, but I didn't want to betray you, dear reader, by reviewing something that I had no experience with.
Now that we're done with semantics, lets move on to the good stuff.
Positive experiences:
-The ability to make a social media posts, e.g. Facebook and Twitter, and see the results of that post in real time paints a much more detailed and relevant picture than currently seeing a page summary once a day.
-It's helped me to examine my posts, content, and styling and see what works and what doesn't.
-Being able to experiment and create a more accurate time window in order to maximize traffic is a huge plus.
Negatives:
-Not being able to view the traffic sources for individual pages. Having this would be beneficial, but I don't consider it a huge drawback.

I found Real-Time last week and am loving it. For instance, we (my partner and I) were checking out real-time together and noticed that a few people were leaving our Finish Order page. Why?. I quickly jumped onto our sites "Live" chat service and began a conversation with one of the customers.
They (The customer) was a little freaked that we could see what they were doing onsite, as in, knowing which page they were on, but quickly admitted that they were very impressed that we could help them while they navigated through the site.
Just to clarify, Real-Time didn't actually tell us or show us the customers names or anything like that. We checked the Admin area, Real-Time movement, jumped onto the chat and worked it from there.
The outcome was a good one. We learnt what was stopping a few customers from finishing the purchase. We improved the final order page. Which resulted in a better operating site, more efficient sales and happy customers, who like the way we do business.
Cheers Google, as innovative as ever .. thanks.

Realtime doesn't support profiles with a filter:
We work a lot with filters and we have a lot of "normal" Users. So it would be great if there will be Real-Time support for Non-Administrators for profiles with a filter.
A workaround could be to sign a second profile without any filter....

Just got access to the beta. Looks great. But the big thing missing is real-time events.
We publish a lot of custom events to Google Analytics (user signed up, user did action, ...etc), and they're as important or more important than page views to us. Can't wait to see that added.

Any idea when this will be available for all? I'm pretty anxious to get rid of my other realtime package, and utilize one interface for my analytics needs. However, no luck on getting it on my account yet... :(

When I'm viewing my analytics realtime data, and if I go to my website in a different browser, on the same PC, a realtime visitor shows... but only as a paid click.... if I test the realtime feature, and it shows me as a paid click visitor, am I being charged on my adwords account?.... If so, how do I get a refund?

I really love analytics real time! It helps so much in determining exactly how a visitor interacts with your site, live. Old stats are great, but seeing people use your site in real time, is a totally different ballpark. There are also so many different ways of tracking it, it is a bit overwheling at times. This will really come in handy when building new sites as well! Thanks google. Keep up the great work.

Real time dashboard is one of the best options of analytics tool. Every visit is marked with spot on the map, referrals and keywords. Instead of analyzing statistics for previous period, now is possible to react faster and watch site visitors in real time. "tail -f access_log" is no longer needed ;)

@mourad -- Unfortunately, there really isn't a way for us to know.
Unless GA is specifically whitelisted, it's very likely blocked by AdBlock Plus. So if GA can't "see" those sites/visitors, there's no way to accurately count them.

I have a couple of bugs. First, I use french for the language and it shows "Undefined parameter" for the time passed in Pages views. Second, when all my cities are in Canada, it shows the US map with the dots above. Here's my screen capture:

The missing export to pdf is a disaster - will this return?
When comparing historical data the old version did a much better job. Maybe I'm able to create the exact image - but I've been unable to solve it on my own. Please compare the images below to see my problem:

The old version is superior to the new one :(

Thank Google Analytics team for a great post..
Google real time analytics is such a great achievement of Google. Today we can access filter data. This is free ware but Google has also launched paid analytics. So i want to know what are the major difference between them??

Can you tell me how you capture this data? Our program is used in elementary schools and when tracking real-time data it will show that only 1-5 users are on the site from any given city. The majority of our users actually have 20-30 students logged in at any given time, so these numbers don't add up. What the reason for this? We've assumed that you grab the IP address and that in schools perhaps several computers work off of the same address..? But this is just speculation. We would love to know so we can have a better idea of accuracy.

It's great you started supporting Real-Time for profiles with the filters. But can you make it available to all users? We can't make everyone ad administrator in order for them to access Real-Time in profiles with the filters.

have to say fantastic addition you are catching Omniture and offering a product that really helps with decision making during significant events.
It would be great if the information collected via real time can be accessed at any point in history, have you thought of adding that functionality?
