Design updates to the new interface coming next week

In March, we unveiled the new version of Google Analytics that included, along with many other improvements, a redesigned user interface. Since then we’ve heard from many of you on how we can improve different aspects of the design.

Designers from our User Experience team took a step back objectively asked "How can we make Analytics better?" They focused on the core organization (our information architecture) and way-finding as areas that could be improved. What followed were a series of brainstorming sessions with engineers and product managers, analysis of your feedback, customer interviews, card-sort studies, and general user testing – all done to iterate on our product while keeping our users involved in the process.

Next week we’ll release these changes. The biggest change you'll notice is that we have simplified the primary navigation into three tabs – Home, Standard Reporting, and Custom Reporting – to give you quicker access to the information that matters. We also incorporated the second layer of navigation that appeared in "My Site" throughout the Home and Standard Reporting tabs.

Here's what you can expect in each tab:

Home: The Home tab holds all reports and features that allow you to quickly understand what is happening on your site. You’ll find your custom dashboards here as well as your automatic and custom alerts from Google Analytics Intelligence.

Standard Reporting: All the built-in reports to understand your audience, advertising impact, traffic sources, conversions, content, and more are now displayed in one central place.

We're also excited about the addition of a report finder in the Standard Reporting tab. This will allow you to type the name of a report you’re interested in and quickly navigate to it without needing to hunt for it in the proper section.

Custom Reporting: Google Analytics lets you build your own reports to get exactly the data you need. With the new tab, we’re making Custom Reports a more important part of the interface. You’ll be able to access any reports you’ve created here and build new ones.

So what's next for our designers? We have a number of improvements planned to the overall Analytics interface to bring more focus on data, as well as exciting new features that will make analyzing data faster and easier.

If you'd like to help shape Google Analytics and want to participate in future user studies, please register here.

UPDATE: 10/14/2011 11:25am PST - And we're back. The design updates are back on for everyone.

UPDATE: 10/7/2011 9:30am PST - We've temporarily turned these updates off for a couple days to fix an issue. They'll be back in a couple days.

UPDATE: 10/6/2011 3:00pm PST - These updates are now live in the new version. Enjoy!

This sounds great. Please could you reinstate the percentage change value when comparing metrics over two time periods?

This was a really useful feature but it's missing in GA 5, which means a calculator is needed.

Thanks

Another thing would be to show in the time segment the maximum date possible when going back in time. It doesn't say when my GA was installed and i keep going to far back... loosing a little minute every time (Maybe in grey). Also, this is really just an idea, but to show a traffic prediction just like in Insight. It is so nice to see a ascending (or descending) graph in the future!

Dashboards could use the most improvement. I know I am not alone in relying on external sources, pulling and placing data myself. I would love to be able to:
- Show more custom data configurations
- Show more data rows
- Compare more data columns
- I-frame tables and charts

Yes, Kubot12 is right for the
- Compare more data columns
but with a third data, not only two links in between them.

Another very important thing would be to easier be able to say that the account is in webmasters with the non canonical version... This is such a hassle to see the two versions, not knowing what version should stay, which one should be taken out...

+1 on Matt's comment too.
I'm assuming the Export to PDF will be back in this round of updates?

Another feature I would like to have; when you set up an Advanced Segments and Custom Reports, it would be useful if all accounts that have access could see these - rather than having to set them up again for each user.

@Neil Like a share your work/custom button? That's a great idea!

Allot of clients ask for only a few variables (i.e.:New traffic by search engines en relation to time spent on site for a time period) but if you could had a third variable, that would do insane custom PDF exposés.

Proud user of GA and the test UI.

Sorry to say it does not work from my ipad. Selection boxes and drop downs are not standard and does not work in safari on the ipad.

I am guessing that real-time analytics are only available to US accounts for now? I have been trying to access them here in Canada, but no tab appears. Please lets see them added for the rest of us soon. Very soon!

PLEASE yes, bring back the percentage change when comparing periods. Overall, I find the old interface is better. I'm really not the type of person to generally go for old interfaces just because I'm used to them, but in this case, the old interface provides more of the functionality I use, and is faster at it.

ALSO, the new interface does not display properly on a 1024px wide display! I need to scroll horizontally! This goes against all of Google's design ideals.

New Interface is cool but need time to figure all option out

I really miss the table at a glance for the statistics. Having to drill down a level or two and then only getting to see site at a time is kind of a step backward.

Has the ability to export reports to PDF been removed from the new version? I hope that this functionality will be back very soon!

Hey Guys, great effort for a great and free product.

Just missed the main Dashboard of old interface, where i could see high level stats (and up or down progress) of all my websites on same page. then i could choose to drill into which website i want to investigate.

Just wanted to convey my thanks and feedback.

I liked the previous new interface. Not sure why have gone back to this interface?

New design was great, as was realtime. But it looks like both features have reverted - that true?

I don't get it. And with that I mean I still get the old UI not the redesign. Is there a flip I need to switch?
