I typically use clicktale for form analysis but using the eventtracker instead of pageTracker could create a rich dataset to analyze.

The idea is to record an event when the form is submitted for each field:

* category = formname

* action = field staus either passed or failed

* label = field name

* value = field completion time (lostfocus tickcount - gained focus tickcount)

An example for the simple form would be:

pageTracker._trackEvent('Newsletter','Passed Validation','email',2.1);
pageTracker._trackEvent('Newsletter','Failed Validation','password',0.1);

Tracking this way means you'll have a count of newsletter events and how many fields passed vs failed. You'll be able to compare how many times a field was submitted successfully vs unsuccessfully and even see the average duration to complete a field (to find complex fields).

A final improvement would be to add an onunload call to log an event to record the last completed field if the form wasn't submitted to see where visitors commonly drop out of submitting.

pageTracker._trackEvent('Newsletter','Abandoned form','fieldname',0.1);

The idea behind this version is that you get to see the performance of forms and fields as you try to improve them over time. The version proposed in the blog only works over time if your fields stay the same.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08371251282002670099noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3580069.post-80281648027025379222010-04-13T15:08:53.960-04:002010-04-13T15:08:53.960-04:00If your form only has 2 input fields, this techniq...If your form only has 2 input fields, this technique would appear to work.

BUT, if you've got 3 input fields, the number of variables grows to 8
(2 ^ # of fields).

With 4 fields, you go to 16 variables, etc.

I've got 20 input fields on my SMALLEST form, 2^20 (AKA, 1M) variables.

No Thanks!Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09310303389084165345noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3580069.post-59111131507861838412010-04-13T13:29:16.405-04:002010-04-13T13:29:16.405-04:00If you have a popular form and people seem to fail...If you have a popular form and people seem to fail a lot on it, wouldn't this technique give false pageview numbers for your site, or area of your site?Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15399106117228647020noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3580069.post-27439311857588324872010-04-13T11:45:00.404-04:002010-04-13T11:45:00.404-04:00Great information! Thanks for the post. I also a...Great information! Thanks for the post. I also appreciate the fact that you included a general guideline of what FER should be. People don't include this type of information enough.

As a side note, I just wanted to point out that your formula doesn't need to be multiplied by 100%. 100% = 1.00, so you are just multiplying by 1.

So your first example of:
FER = (2/3) * 100% = 66%
Converted to decimals:
FER = (.66) * 1.00 = .66
Then Converted to percentages:
FER = 66% * 100% = 66%

You just need to do the division and convert from a decimal to a percentage. Multiplying by 100% does not convert a decimal to a percentage.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00565593481586278189noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3580069.post-9715040126122888232010-04-13T08:38:48.399-04:002010-04-13T08:38:48.399-04:00Tomasz, can you please show us how where to put &q...Tomasz, can you please show us how where to put "_trackPageview() function", and if any other bits are required in order to be able to track the forms.

Thanks

JanAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3580069.post-61256659963993420662010-04-13T06:38:47.889-04:002010-04-13T06:38:47.889-04:00Great thinking.
