I know it can introduce errors, but it would give me a place to start. Every example that I can find on the web either has a static result, or a plug in variable (with a static number of items), which I think for most people is overly simplified.

Part 4 of this walk through is the only example I have seen that actually uses the javascript to collect the information and put it in the page. Some of the common problems that contribute to the discrepancy include:

* Canceled orders. Because GA captures the transaction when the thank you page is displayed, any transactions that are canceled at a later date can over inflate the revenue.

* Missing transactions. This can be caused by a number of things including incorrect code implementation or the location of the code. Double check your code to make sure you have the required fields and that the JavaScript is sending the data to Google. You may want to use one of the tools listed here to view the __utm.gif requests.

Another issue, many visitors may navigate away from the site before the commerce data is sent to GA. You may want to move the code to the top of the page so it reports the data to GA sooner. Just make sure you keep the page tag above the commerce code.

* Multiple domains. This isn't an ecommerce issue, but we often see revenue attributed to the website's domain. This is actually a problem with cross domain tracking, not ecommerce tracking.

Hope that helps and thanks for the comment!

JustinJustin Cutronihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14345583571889222401noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3580069.post-13401379424624792002009-05-07T23:25:00.000-04:002009-05-07T23:25:00.000-04:00Ditto: I do agree that there is the potential for...Ditto: I do agree that there is the potential for error because of the number of required fields. However, the number of fields can also be used as an opportunity. In part Part 4 of the series I talk about how to use e-commerce in creative ways. Basically you can use all the fields to collect extra info providing more insight.

Steve & Daddy Love: Part 2 of the series covers the more technical aspects of the code, including an example. But it does not include a screen scraping example. Screen scraping can be tough and introduce errors. I suggest going with a server side solution.Justin Cutronihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14345583571889222401noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3580069.post-62117087155247305572009-05-07T21:06:00.000-04:002009-05-07T21:06:00.000-04:00The thing that no analytics solution has solved is...The thing that no analytics solution has solved is how to handle one-off and subscription purchases in the same sale.

I work for a telco and so we sell subscriptions to services, but also make one-off sales (modems, mobile handsets, installation fees) inside a purchase. I've run ecommerce tracking on multiple high-profile websites, and there always seems to be teething problems - i.e. large descrepancies in tranactions and revenue from one interface to the next. I know it's likey to be our implementation, rather than GA as such - but the possible problems we face can't be that uncommon. We use .NET, and it would be great to know what problems may occur from this perspective, or generally?? You don't need to hide that problems may occur in the accuracy of client-side analytics data, any real professional accepts this, we just need to minimise their impact. Specifically I have been scouring the web for an example where if the receipt is where the e-commerce code is there, I would like to scrape all the transaction and item data from the page of itself, preferable a multiple item example. My guess is that this would be either purely javascript or javascript + PHP. Is there any chance you can post an example of this? Pretty please :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3580069.post-80460358396638077392009-05-07T18:22:00.000-04:002009-05-07T18:22:00.000-04:00The e-commerce tracking should have less required ...The e-commerce tracking should have less required data. For organizations that process contributions rather than selling merchandise, there's no need for the concept of an "item" or any of its associated fields, nor is there tax, shipping, affiliate, or store name, and often not even transaction ID.

I should be able to do e-commerce tracking with only the Total field, with all other fields optional. Otherwise I just have to make stuff up to fill in these fields, and this just creates opportunities for bugs and inconsistencies in the reports.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06969302135822857188noreply@blogger.com
