New Google Analytics: Improvements in Mobile Reporting

Labels: New Google Analytics
This is part of our series of posts highlighting the new Google Analytics. The new version of Google Analytics is currently available in beta to all Analytics users. And follow Google Analytics on Twitter for the latest updates. This week, we’ll discuss some recent improvements to mobile reporting in Google Analytics.
Internet traffic from mobile devices is growing rapidly with smartphones and tablets expected to outsell computers this year. Google Analytics already provides a number of ways to track this growing mobile Internet usage from standard tracking on smartphones to SDKs for embedding Google Analytics into applications in iOS and Android. We’re hard at work at delivering more.
Today you'll see small first step along our path to improve mobile reporting inside Google Analytics: a new Mobile section in Visitors reporting.
Inside the Mobile section you’ll find two new reports. The first is a Mobile Overview report, which shows the simple breakdown between mobile traffic and non-mobile traffic.
The second report is the Devices report, which provides information about the various mobile devices that visit your site. As part of this report, we’ve added three new dimensions: Mobile Device Info, Mobile Device Branding, and Mobile Input Selector. Data for all these dimensions is available starting from June 6, 2011.
Mobile Device Info is the actual hardware that visited your site. One of the nice benefits of this report is you can quickly see a picture of any device. While you’ve probably seen an iPhone in person and have an idea about how your site will look on one, that might not be the case for less common devices like for example, the Nokia E63. Click the camera icon next to any device to see pictures of it.
Mobile Device Branding lets you see the brand associated with the phone. Depending on the device this might be the manufacturer or the carrier. Mobile Input Selector shows the primary input method for the device, whether it’s a touch screen, a clickwheel (like you’ll find on a Blackberry), or even a stylus.
And if you haven’t tried out the improvements to map overlay reports that we talked about last week, give them a try in the Mobile reports to visualize where your mobile traffic is coming from.

This is great stuff Trevor! Mobile is becoming more and more important.
Will these new dimensions be available in the API as well?
Definitely want to have this info available in <a href="http://www.analyticscanvas.com>Analytics canvas</a>

After Login to Old Analytic, we can review the data summary of all the websites which includes total visits, time son sites, Goal etc and then may choose a sites to view after seeing unusual changes. But in new analytic, one have to open each sites profile to view its summary and so we can not compare each sites at once.
It is difficult to know which sites is performing better easily.
Please add it to new analytic.

Thank you Trevor & Google for such an approach
However all the old mobile traffic is now gone from the site, we can't track it anymore!!
Is this on purpose or is it a bug of some kind?
Please elaborate ....

I'm using GA to tracking a mobile site. With the new version of GA I see the data about the mobile overview report but i have no data with devices report. It's very strange, because with web site i don't have this problem. Could it be that the google account create for web site is UA-xxxxxx and for mobile site is MO-xxxxx?

Hello, was looking forward to those kind of tracking down to the device. Unfortunately we don't see any devices in the new IF :-(. Do we need to change something in the ga tracking to use those stats?

Guys, I have to say the new version is much more cumbersome to use. Things that used to take 1-2 clicks take 4-5.
Or maybe there's a way to get to it in the new version that just isn't as obvious as the old version.
For example, to see Google organic sources by keyword, it takes 2 clicks. Trafffic Sources -> Google (organic)
In the new version it takes 4-5
Traffic Sources -> Overview -> Source -> Google.com -> Input Secondary dimensions for keywords
Or
Traffic Sources -> Overview -> Search -> Organic -> Input Secondary dimensions for keywords
Sorry, I'm not trying to complain, but it just takes a lot more clicking to get the data you want. I know it's all ajaxy and stuff so its not really extra page loads, but the extra clicking is getting annoying. I still use the old interface because its so much faster to get what I need.
Also, when you have a lot of profiles you view, the drop down to switch between them is much more cumbersome too, especially if they are in different accounts. I can search, so now I have to do that which helps but again it takes longer and I have to use my mouse AND type instead of just doing one action earlier.
Just my 0.02. Please consider streamlining some of these based on tracking the click data to see what the majority of people look for all the time.

While this is a useful addition, the fact that so many users are unable to utilise the 'mobile traffic' advanced segment runs contrary to this blog post.
There are numerous postings in help forums detailing the absence of any data for mobile in advanced segments. A resolution to this would be much appreciated by all the Beta users.

Help: I have a profile set up for mobile.somewebsite.com (example).
Why do my Total visits to the site not match the summed up visits in the mobile device report? Can 3% of my actual traffic to the mobile site be coming from non-mobile computer browser traffic?

Hello, I'm using the Google Analytics for Mobile (server-side) package. In our report, we are not seeing any Mobile Device Data or Mobile Branding Data.
Is this a feature that is not yet enabled? I hope to get an answer soon to this.
For the moment, can someone answer/verify this question. Is the javascript-based analytics package the only 'true' way to get mobile device info?
Thanks,
Adam

Hi and thanks for the article. I'm managing myself into GA; mobile are detected well, but the last generation of Blackeberry use a "complete browser"
eg: TORCH 9800
Mozilla/5.0 (BlackBerry; U; BlackBerry 9800; en-US) AppleWebKit/534.1+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/6.0.0.246 Mobile Safari/534.1+
At this moment I can detect the browser version, because I know it, with some difference, the width of screen.
But GA doesn't count the visit "from BB 9800" as mobile. BB 9800 is not listed. Brand and model are not revealed.
Bye from Italy
Gianpiero

The new features are great. I have a questions about the mobile devices under visitors. What does it mean by "not set"? I see a significant number of visits from "not set". Thanks

Excellent to provide more detail on mobile devices instead of simply reporting "Nokia" and "iPhone". Mobile device resolution, operating system and other information IS required for proper mobile sites optimization.
And the real-time monitor is just great. It works perfect even in extremely heavy traffic sites.

Its exciting to see how many people visit your site just from iPad and iPhone devices alone. Our Google team suggested we start a campaign targeting only those devices with some general keywords associated with our business. We are starting today...its a great idea, no matter what your business vertical.
