The New Google Analytics: Dashboards

Labels: New Google Analytics
This is the first in a series of posts highlighting the new Google Analytics. The new version of Google Analytics is currently available in beta to a small number of Analytics users. We’ll be giving access to more users soon. Sign up for early access.
Today, we would like to introduce you to the new dashboards that is available in the new version of Google Analytics announced last week.
Custom Dashboards
For most Google Analytics users, the dashboard is the first thing you see when viewing your reports. Dashboards in the new version of Google Analytics have been redesigned to be completely widget-based and highly customizable. There are four types of widgets: Metric, Pie Chart, Timeline, and Table. This gives you the ability to choose the visualization that best suits the data you want in your dashboard. The Dashboard uses a three-column layout, and you can customize the layout by dragging and dropping the widgets as you’d like.
- Metric: Shows the value of a metric and a sparkline of that metric over the selected time period
- Pie Chart: Best suited for displaying breakdowns of a metric by a certain dimension. E.g., Visits by Browser Type.
- Timeline: A graph of any metric over time. You can also compare two metrics in the same graph.
- Table: Think of this as a mini-custom report. You can show one dimension with two metrics and up to 10 rows of data in a table.
Multiple Dashboards
A common request we heard from you all is that one dashboard isn’t enough. You told us that wanted the ability to customize multiple dashboards for different analyses. Thanks to the new Google Analytics platform, we’re happy to give you the power to create multiple custom dashboards, up to 20 per profile. You might start with an overall “Company KPIs” Dashboard that includes the most important performance indicators for your company, then create an “SEO” Dashboard for your search engine optimization efforts, and a “Content” Dashboard that centers around the content of your website. We’d love to hear what you do with the other 17 slots.
Going Forward
The core functionality for the new dashboards is ready for you to use, but this isn’t everything we’ve planned for dashboards in the new version. Because we are so excited about the new Dashboard, we decided to make its core features available to you first. For starters, we still need to bring some of the features from the current dashboard over, such as the ability to share, email, and export a Dashboard. We are actively working on them (along with many other improvements), so please stay tuned.
We hope you will find the Dashboards in the new Analytics easy and fun to use. Happy Dashboarding!

Looks great, I hope on the main screen you give me the option to see all my website profiles immediately by default. Instead of having to always go to the drown down and switching the amount of rows shown.

In the new dashboard, I see 2 metrics - Visitors and Total Visitors. What is the difference between the two?

It would be a great help to all web marketers especially SEOs if the SERP ranks are also displayed in the GA reports next to the keywords.
I know that the SERPs keep on changing but it is an important reporting field for all SEO reports as the traffic does depend on how high to rank.
Yes the true approach is the holistic approach to SEO but having this in the GA reports will reduce our dependence on other third party reports and we can just concentrate on Google webmaster tools and GA for analysis.
I suggest that there can be 2 fields for SERPs one the SERP for the keyword when the click took place and one field showing the current SERP when the report is being accessed.

Google Analytics has helped us tremendously! We have a tiny company and we cannot currently afford to pay a team of MBAs and to track our competitors with the real-time analytics that we get with Google Analytics. Thank you Google for your extremely valuable reporting of our Internet marketing results. Thank you Google for giving us a fast view of our competitors' Internet marketing.
Example: We put up our page in September 2008 and within about 8 months we saw (with Google Analytics) a jump from 7 non-competing web pages to over 8 million directly competing web pages. We have been tracking via Google Analytics since then and have used Google Analytics to help us adapt to competition and respond to our customers' needs.
Again: Thank you Google.

I am reviewing my access to the new GA. I like the customization, but I do not see how to filter dashboards to a particular contact. Say that I have 3 managers; one would want to see all my dashboards, while another would need two, and another would see 5. There should be a intuitive selector available at the dashboard screen. I have been reviewing the features for the last 4 hours (started at 2 am!) and very excited about the new dashboard, but I am not seeing a selection for guiding specific boards to specific GA users. Thanks.

ok, scratch my last comment - I just saw the export comment. I am sure the Google team will consider how to export/share the dashboard information, as well as developing the selector to do so. Thanks for reading my comments.

I really like the new interface, very simple to drag & drop various visualisations, I've been making use of the 20 available to configure snapshots for different marketing campaigns, PPC, SEO, Social Media efforts however I'd really like to be able to drop reports into the dashboards. I have conversion funnels configured and I'd like to add the visualisation report to my conversion dashboard.
I'd also really like to see the share / email function added to the new dashboards as these are great one-stop-shop reports that can be sent to clients, senior management, etc.
Overall I'm impressed good job :)

I tried the new version, and really exciting, more user friendly.
But when I compare two time range (for exampl, last week, and week before last week) I don't see the difference in percentage between the 2 time range.
I hope this is just because it's beta.
Do you know somebody, where i could write feedback directly?
I don't find this opportunity.
thanks

Overall, I'm a big fan of the new Google Analytics interface.
Two issues I've encountered:
1. I can't find the Hostnames report - has that been moved or permanently removed?
2. I don't see the option to Export Reports to PDF anymore - has that been moved or permanently removed?

As always with any Google tool for web masters, this will help us be effective in helping Google direct relevant, updated content, to Google's customer in the right way, ensuring their customers get the information they are looking for with the fewest clicks.

It's a pity that the reports is not formed/designed like dashboards. I also lack of export to pdf and sending reports via e-mail. Maybe these features are hidden somewhere? For me, this functionality is crucial.

Great! The only thing i'd also like to see is the possibility to have the timeline graph on the top position of the dashboard on the full width of the page(as it was before) and to export it to pdf.

I would love the ability to build a Dashboard around an advanced segment. We do a lot of work around individual product categories and use advanced segments a ton to dive deeper into the patterns that make visitor's want to buy something from us. Being able to have a Dashboard pre-constructed for each category would be phenomenal for quick updates.

I like some things in the new interface, but there are a few SERIOUS PROBLEMS with it that make it a nightmare to use it, compared to the previous version!
The most degrading experience comes from the Filters:
1. Before, the filter field was immediately visible and clickable. Now that requires 2 clicks.
2. After I enter a filter value, it won't submit with an - I have to go back to my mouse to click that button - soooo bad.
3. Horrible: the new filter fields DO NOT SUPPORT REGEX. !@#!#$%^#!) THIS IS UNFORGIVABLE. This makes my work 10 times harder already, no matter any other "improvement"
4. The choosing of metric/dimension to filter through has become a lot more difficult. I have to click and type and then click again. WTF? Before it was just one click.
There are some things that I like in the new version, but the above is just unforgivable and is gonna mean so much wasted time for me. I hope to have access to the old version for a long, long time, if those are not fixed.

Same as txhorselady and Ryan Salvanera.
There is not way to add the map overlay to the new dashboard? The only thing you can add is the Pie chart or a table. Not as good looking as the map.

AHEM! SINCE THIS QUESTION HAS BEEN ASKED TWICE, WITH NO RESPONSE, I WILL TYPE IT IN ALL CAPS. NOTE: I AM NOT THE SORT WHO NORMALLY TYPES THINGS IN ALL CAPS. IN FACT, I ALMOST NEVER DO, BUT APPARENTLY THIS IS AN OCCASION THAT REQUIRES IT. HERE GOES...
WHERE ARE THE MAPS?
ARE THE MAPS GONE OR ARE THEY BURIED SO DEEPLY THAT THEY ARE JUST HARD TO FIND?
OK. Caps off.
I find the maps the maps in the old version very helpful and informative. How do we turn them on in the new version?

I'm also going to add my puzzlement-- HOW DO I ADD A MAP TO THE NEW DASHBOARD?
This seems like an obvious thing... and the first thing I look at in the old interface.
Why would you remove it?
This is obviously deliberate, and there has obviously been a lot of internal discussion on this-- regardless of your reasoning...
ADD A MAP WIDGET!!!

I would like to be able to customize the location of my widgets on the dashboard and not have to lock in to the preset locations.
Plus it would be great to be able to widen the width the widgets use.
Right now I have a table that is wider than the widget. The table is showing in full, but it is expanding outside the border of the widget.
