Looking towards the future of Google Analytics

Labels: Announcements, New Google Analytics
Today at the Google Analytics User Conference in San Francisco, we shared a look at a new version of Google Analytics. We’ve also reached out to a small group of Analytics users to participate in the testing. If you’re part of this group you’ll see a link to the new version in your Analytics account. We’re starting small, and we’ll gradually roll the new version out to everyone.
Our goals for the new version are to make it easier and faster to get to the data you want and to enhance the Google Analytics platform to bring you major new functionality. Many of the changes in the new version are the result of your feedback. For example, you can now view multiple advanced segments without needing to also use All Visits. You’ll find some of the other most requested features like multiple dashboards in the new version as well.
We’ll be sharing many more details about what’s new along the way with a new series on the blog focused exclusively on the new Analytics. In the meantime, if you want to be considered for the test, visit the beta sign-up page. Using the new version won’t change how Google Analytics reports your website traffic, and you can continue to use the current version while testing the new Analytics.
As you start using the new Google Analytics, you should also check out the updated Google Analytics Help Center and the Report Finder, which will show you where to find your favorite reports in the new version. We’ve also set up a new category in the Help Forum where you can ask questions and discuss the new version.
This release wouldn’t have been possible without your feedback. Please continue to send us your feedback as you start using the new interface.
Happy analyzing!
UPDATE: 3/17/11 1:40pm PST, we fixed an issue that prevented us from collecting sign-ups. If you signed-up before 1:40pm PST, please sign-up again: beta sign-up page.

This is exciting news, is there anyway to volunteer to become part of the group that gets access? Would be great to have a look at the benefits to a relatively new website that is trying to take on some big boys and the information the new analytics may offer. I spend half may day on analytics, it has become an obsession, should I be worries :)

Hi,
Will the new version have any changes to the way it samples data?
At the moment our site is looking at around 200,000 visits a day which means digging into the data over a date range of more than a few days leads to sampled data.
Danny.

Is it possible to bring the Hostname report back? I literally use this daily and would miss it.
The new version looks incredible, though!

So exciting to see the new version of Google Analytics. Love the navigation names - more related to online marketing.
But I couldn't find any custom report I created in the old version. I do see 'Custom Reports' tab, but there is nothing there.
Also where is Filter Manager?

UI refresh is good but key features like PDF export & automated EMAIL reports taken out is a massive ISSUE.
I am sure these features are used by most GA users and do not see a reason for Google to remove them.
Another important feature missing in the new version is traffic by "Screen Resolution". This is very important for making key decisions on design of a website.
I hope Google looks into these features and puts them back as these are key to many businesses.

Signed up. Cant' wait to try the new interface.
By the way, I don't understand why fall in 'New Visit' rate (while in Comparison mode) is displayed in red font (alert)? Decrease in New Visit rate means that the site has more returning visitors, which is good, right ?
May be you would want to reconsider it while rolling out the new version.

Can you bring back the benchmarking portion? That has been a great tool that our agency used in reporting to clients how their website compares to other similar websites. It allows us to demonstrate the value of the brands we market and the quality of the websites we build in a quantitative format.

@Pratik,
These features weren't removed from the new version, they haven't been released yet :) PDF export and email reports will be coming to the new version soon.
Regarding, Screen Resolution, you can do this now.
Under Visitor - Technology - Browser & OS. Look above the table and you can pivot on Browser, OS, Screen Resolution and more.

There are many improvements! Dashboards customization is really great, and search among all accounts as well. But there is one thing that keep me using old version. When on a report, we can't filter anymore. We can search.. but isn't the same. Filter is the easier way to have data and see on graphs some trends. And also compare with all site traffic. You should back to filter on reports! please
thanks

I don't know if I am just missing it, but I am trying to recreate a custom report since it doesn't seem I can import it, and I can't find the metric "Unique Visitors" in the metric options.
On another note, I'd like to see aggregate data moved back below the graph and with the rows of data.. Plus, the aggregate data is not changing based on adding a filter. Thanks.

The new beta is great especially the cutom reporting feature. I couldn't find the "In-page analysis"/page overlay function in the new version. Will it be maintained?

@ Trevor
Thanks for the update. Will wait eagerly for it.
I have a feature request - Share custom reports with others (strictly restricted to custom report and nothing else)
8:43 PM
Trevor Claiborne said...
@Pratik - do you mean the structure of the report (as you can do in the current version) or the complete report with data and all?
For the former, that's definitely coming. For the latter, that's probably best served by exporting the report. You can do CSV, TSV export now (try flat tables for extra awesomeness), and PDF export is coming soon.

many nice new features but as far as I can see a surprising number of disappiointments too:
1. It doesn’t always run properly with error message frequently popping up in my version. This should fix in time.
2. The trend line doesn’t change to reflect report filtering as it does in the previous version! – a huge mistake in my opinion making quick analysis and insight now a laborious process.
3. The headline reporting data (now shown above the trend lines, before it was below) doesn’t change to reflect report filtering as it does in the previous version; meaning that you can’t run a quick filter to see what percentage of site total you are looking at – another significant inconvenience adding more time to gathering insight.
4. Like for like data based on selected time periods no longer shows % change! This one is criminal!

This is what I call an update to get excited about! Improved layout, improved conversion tracking, improved goals overview, reports, improved traffic sources, custom dashboards!!, custom gadgets, custom reports and additional exporting features! Woot! Let's go Google!!! Thank you!!
Now, don't get me wrong, I am very happy to be one of the selected Analytics users that they turned this on for but my only question is How long until Google Analytics Beta V5 is released to the public?

Will "Content by Title" be added to the new GA? We use this instead of the "Top Content" report. In order for our reports to show accurate comparisons to previous data and reports, this is very much needed. Thanks very much for all the updates and sleek new format!

I just realized that Screen Resolution is no longer available. This has got to be fixed. In these days when more and more people are using mobile devices, this sort of information is absolutely critical when making design decisions. I have other nits, but this is the only one I will mention because it is really a bit deal.
