Evolution of Analytics Benchmarking Report
Friday, March 04, 2011 | 3:39 PM
This week, we are beginning a new way of providing benchmarking data to Google Analytics users. For almost three years, Google Analytics has provided a Benchmarking report for users who opt in for anonymous data sharing. In a few days, however, we will be removing the Benchmarking report from the Google Analytics interface, and replacing it with an expanded report that will be emailed directly to you.
In the coming few weeks, we’ll be delivering the new benchmarking report to all account administrators for accounts that are opted-in to anonymous data sharing. The report will expand on the type of data delivered to include broader trends, such as geographic or traffic source differences in visitor engagement. If you are interested in receiving the new benchmarking report, you can opt-in to anonymous data sharing.
- Sign into your Google Analytics account
- Select the account you want to opt-in from the account list
- Select Edit account settings
- Check the box next to Anonymously with Google and others

If you want one last look at the current reports make sure you visit them in the next few days. We’re looking forward to your feedback on the new format of the benchmarking report. Look out for it in the coming weeks.

This all sounds great, but none of this info is on my Accounts setting page.....yet?

This is all fine, but the option
"4 Check the box next to Anonymously with Google and others"
is not available to mark on the Edit account settings page.
I think you guys got the proverbial cart before the horse on this one.
I really like the Benchmark feature and hope I have miraculously been opted in to receive the email report.

I wish I could just continue to see these the old fashion way. I never check the email of the account associated with analytics and don't intend to. Are we really reinventing the wheel here? Why?

True Story:
Client: Is it possible to compare our site to other sites in our industry?
Me: Sure Google Analytics has a benchmarking report, I'll send you one once I get back to the office.
(Back at the office)
Me: Where is it? I know it was right here!
(Google Search: Google Analytics Benchmark report missing and found this blog post)
Me: Noooooooo!
(Patiently waiting for its return.)

Hi,
I was used to check my benchmark report very often.
When will you start to send this new report and how often will it be sent?

I would have appreciated if this post also indicated if these benchmark reports will be emailed periodically or regularly.
I would have viewed these reports every month, if available on the interface.

No wonder I can't find it! Perhaps this should have been highlighted under announcements?

Thanks for the update but this is very disappointing news. I'll be blogging about this as a major loss to the Analytics feature set. Like many others, I use benchmarking for monthly or sometime weekly reporting to my clients. Time and time again I've found this to be single most important metric my clients want to see. They simply want to know how their site is performing against the competition, and quarterly updates just don't cut it.
More importantly, this brings up a number of questions about how you plan on reporting benchmarks. I've found it very helpful to be able to select various industries upon which to benchmark against. In your email report, how will you know which industries I'd like to see benchmarking data for? Moreover, when I set up Analytics accounts for new clients, how will you determine which industry they belong to?
To be quite honest, this "evolution" makes me question why benchmarking was removed. Are you really trying to improve or "expand" these reports? Has your team discovered a bug? Is this a cost saving measure?
I would sincerely appreciate any and all feedback you can give me.
Thanks,

I have to admit, I almost never used benchmarking, since I work in education and (last time I checked) GA didn't let me filter by educational institutions. But I always hoped it would get better in the future, and kept sharing my data with Google anyway. Now, I think I'll stop, since I don't really want an email report - that's so much less convenient!

Why would you remove the benchmarking report without replacing it? Shouldn't the upgrade be available before you take down the legacy option?

I've clicked on my edit settings so I can opt-in, but there is no section that says 'Share my google analytics data' - I only have profile information, goals, filters and access.
Am I in the wrong place? or has this function not been switched on yet?
Thanks

I've opted in from the start, but I've had no report. Moreover, I don't want one. I liked things just the way they were. Where's the customer opinion survey that justified this decision Phil Mui?

Here's what Google support tells me:
"The Benchmarking report will be emailed to your quarterly. It is a newsletter that will have information about all the industries in general but there won't be any customizations that can be made to it.
Thank you for your continued patience."
All you will ever see is a quarterly overview of Adwords operations in general.

Perhaps I am blind, but I do not see this option within any of my accounts.
And, to echo the other sentiments, this is incredibly disappointing. You've know made my job just a bit harder.

So this is basically Google's way of saying "The tool was too cool, so we're considering charging it now". We'll make up a bogus report, pretend that some things went out of date, and before you know it, it will be as if free benchmarking never existed. Seems to me I'll opt out of data sharing as well...

Please reinstate the Benchmarking to the reporting page. Quarterly (if and when that actually happens) is totally inadequate. We are looking for Real Time data when WE need it not when you feel like giving it to us. I'm sure we're all paying for AdWords...

I miss the benchmarking tool, it was extremely motivating for our sales team to see data that showed them that the marketing team is backing them up..
Also I can not see the Anonymously with google and others box to tick??? Nor have i received a benchmarking report.
Please bring back the benchmarking tool ASAP.
Why was it taken away in the first place???

Its been several weeks (I think) - can we get an update on when the benchmarking reports will be out - I like the fact that you will control the data more as it will make it more usefull. This stuff doesn't all happen without a glitch here and there and (I believe) your periodic plan to send out updates will provide better and more accurate information - but when will it be out ?

This is the dumbest "evolution" to Google Analytics EVER! The Benchmarking Report was incredibly useful and insightful.
Badly done Google.
Quarterly general benchmark reports are NOT helpful.
Please restore the old Benchmark report!

I wish there was some sort of explanation here justifying this decision rather than simply announcing it. Maybe there was a good reason for changing this from a useful tool that allow comparisons to be made on demand to a quarterly report but I cannot think of any and it is certainly not included here. This is not the mid-1990s, sending out an e-mail report might have been acceptable then but times have changed. Why not send out an expanded report quarterly but keep the benchmarking service? What if I do not actually want an expanded report and was quite happy with the information I could obtain with the original service? Did Google even ask anyone if they wanted this change?

I posted a comment on this Forum some 2 weeks ago but it hasn't appeared. As it was (constructively) critical I guess that it has been "moderated out", so I'll try again!
In line with other comments above I much regret the removal of the powerful benchmarking feature.
WHY did you do this - to save cost?
Please reinstate it. My business logic/need is as follows:-
1. My clients (also therefore G's clients) LIKE it, and ask for it before most else.
2. It is therefore an important part of our SEO offering
3. The planned global comparisons may well be interesting but are not my primary need.
4. What I need is the ability (that used to be there) to assess benchmarks against a range of SPECIFIC and GENERAL categories; and by SPECIFIC TIME PERIODS to match the SEO period/periods being assessed; and the ability to do this analysis WHEN I need it for a SEO report.
I hope that G will respond with some answers and also, please, reinstate it, and IMPROVE it.
Thank you and regards

Please put it back, even if that means just updating the data less often (quarterly). People dont want to dig through a bunch of emails to look at historical data. Seriosuly, and being able to just log in and look at it, evenif just to review it, makes the most sense.
In the meantime, I will probably just turn the feature off altogether.

Hi Julie,
We're working on having more resources to be able to be more helpful, answering questions, forwarding feedback, etc.
Unfortunately at this point I don't know enough to help with issues from before I arrived, but we'll do our best as new stuff comes up.
